Personal protection for yourself and your family if you are being extorted
Extortion is becoming an increasingly serious problem, partly because hackers regularly manage to gain access to digital systems and databases. Well-known are the ransomware attacks, in which IT company systems are held hostage and only released after payment. Individual people are also increasingly confronted with extortion, for example via social media or after their own computer has been hacked without their knowledge. For instance, the Chrome internet browser recently found suspicious code in its software, and Google also found traces of a Chinese hacker group in its Calendar software.
Are you being extorted?
If you are being extorted, someone is trying to make you pay or do something in exchange for your own safety. Blackmail is more or less the same, except you are pressured with the possible disclosure of sensitive information about you.
Act quickly in case of blackmail
In cases of extortion, blackmail, coercion, and threats, there is always an element of force, which is a criminal offense. Therefore, always report it to the police immediately, do not contact the perpetrator, and make sure to protect yourself properly. Nothing is more important than your personal safety.
